Spicy Jamaican beef patties are a Caribbean spicy meat pie. It has a buttery flaky crust that is colored and flavored by the curry powder and turmeric. The spicy filling has just the right amount of spice from the scotch bonnet to give it a nice quick. I like to make a big batch and freeze them, that way I can have a homemade Jamaican beef patty when ever I want. They are also great to give to family and friends.
Beef Patty Ingredients
Ground Beef- Using a leaner ground beef will produce less oil in the meat filling
Scotch Bonnet Pepper- If you can not find fresh scotch bonnets then opt for a habanero pepper which is the closest hot pepper.
Vegetables- yellow onion and garlic bring added flavor to the patties.
Seasonings- The main seasonings needed that you may not have on hand is curry powder, turmeric powder, and all spice. Those are key in both the dough and filling.
Let's Make Easy Jamaican Beef Patties!
First let's make the dough. In a large bowl make flour mixture by combining all purpose flour, curry powder, turmeric, and salt.
Add in cold butter and mix with your hands to create little pea sized crumbles to make a flaky dough.
Add cold water slowly and mix together until a dough is formed.
Form even small circles of dough for the individual beef patties. I was able to make 14. Set in fridge for half hour while the meat filling is being made.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion, garlic, and scotch bonnet and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add in ground beef and cook until browned, breaking up with a wooden spoon. Drain some fat if necessary. Add curry powder, allspice, thyme, salt, black pepper and Worcestershire then mix. Reduce to low heat and simmer for additional 5 minutes.
On a lightly floured work surface, roll out a ball of pastry dough with a rolling pin. Add ground beef filling to bottom half of the dough circles and fold dough over to make half moons or have squares.
I found them to be shaped differently which makes them look more homemade and rustic. To close open edges of the dough, press down on the opening with the tines of a fork to close patty and create a design.
Place on a parchment paper lined baking sheet in a single layer and refrigerate for 10 minutes to help them set. Once out the fridge, brush each patty with egg wash. Pre heat oven to 375° and bake for 20-25 minutes.
